GEORGE TOWN, April 8 — A soy sauce factory that has been operating for over 100 years in Jalan C.Y Choy here has been ordered to close for two weeks from today after it was found to be dirty.

Penang City Council Public Health Standing Committee chairman Ong Ah Teong said an inspection on the premises revealed cat, rat and cockroach droppings were found on the factory floor which was used for processing the soy sauce.

“Subsequently the state Health Department issued a notice for the owner to stop operation for 14 days to ensure the soy sauce factory was really clean,” he said when contacted here today.

He said the factory was also fined RM100 for emitting thick smoke not in accordance with specifications and for not providing suitable emission equipment.

The city council also issued a two-week notice to the factory operator to change or improve its smoke emission method to avoid problems to the residents in the surroundings, he said. — Bernama
