KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 — Low-cost carrier Firefly Airlines today apologised for using the female derriere in its advertisements for cheap flight tickets, after the move drew a torrent of backlash and accusations of sexism.
In a brief two-paragraph statement posted on social media, the airline expressed regret that “certain quarters” were offended by its use of female anatomy to promote its discounted tickets.
“We at Firefly has (sic) no intention to be sexist in how we conduct our business and we have the utmost respect for everyone.
“We regret that our recent advertisement visuals has caused discomfort in certain quarters and for that, we apologise,” read the statement.
Firefly last week used images of women’s buttocks in an advertising campaign for discounted flight tickets. One such advertisement featured the lower half of a woman in the airline’s signature orange and accompanied with the caption “Come grab it real fast” to promote a 50 per cent discount on fares.
The airline withdrew the advertisements during the weekend.
The move drew criticism across social media against the firm, with critics targeting the airline’s apparent objectification of women with its depiction of the female gender in promoting discounted tickets.
