ALOR SETAR, Jan 25 — The Kedah Immigration Department detained 16 illegal immigrants from various countries in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Sapu’ carried out around Alor Setar early this morning.

State Immigration Director, Mohamad Yusri Hashim said that in the operation at 1.50am, inspections were carried out in Jalan Tengah and Jalan Putra resulting in 16 illegal immigrants being detained.

“Upon inspection, eight Myanmar men and five women, one Indonesian male and a female, and a Bangladeshi man, all aged between 16 to 45 years, were detained.

“Following an inspection, they were found to be working as construction workers and a food shop assistant around Alor Setar and were detained for various offences,” he said in a statement today.

Mohamad Yusri said they were all detained in the Immigration lock-up of the Home Ministry Building, Alor Setar for further investigation before being handed over to the Belantik Immigration Detention Depot in Sik. — Bernama
