KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have never issued any statement which specifically mentioned the targets of terrorists in the country.

PDRM Corporate Communication head Datin Asmawati Ahmad said the media statement by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar on Friday only mentioned that police would boost surveillance and security control in places of public focus to ensure public security.

Subsequently, numerous statements cropped up in the social media specifically mentioning several places which purportedly had been confirmed as targets of terrorist groups to carry out attacks in Malaysia.

“PDRM view seriously the spread of such news because it raises the anxiety and fear of the public.

“The public is advised not to easily believe them and to stop sharing news which can create anxiety, specifically those not issued by the national security agencies,” she said in a media statement here today.

At least seven people were confirmed killed in bombings and shootings near a shopping complex in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Meanwhile, a security guard at a shopping complex in Bukit Bintang here contacted the police over the finding of two bags which were left under a chair this afternoon.

Dang Wangi District Police chief, ACP Zainol Samah said a bomb demolition unit was rushed to the scene and inspections revealed that the bags contained clothes.

“Two South Korean women had left the bags there as they wanted to go shopping with plans to retrieve them later,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Zainol said police was satisfied with the inspections and interrogation carried out and had released the two. — Bernama
