KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 — Police today denied specifically identifying any location as being under immediate threat of terrorist attack, and urged the public against spreading the uncorroborated information.
The Royal Malaysia Police's (RMP) communications chief Datin Asmawati Ahmad also clarified that previous announcements of heightened security measures, made following a series of terrorist attacks in Indonesia, were general in nature.
“The RMP has never issued any statement regarding specific areas being targeted by terrorists.
“The Inspector-General of Police's previous remarks on January 15 only stated that police will increase monitoring and security measures at all public locations to guarantee public safety,” she said in a statement today.
Asmawati added that the police viewed seriously attempts to cause unease through the dissemination of such information, and told the public not to believe news that was not based on details released by the proper authorities.
This morning, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor revealed that militant groups were targeting locations such as the Kuala Lumpur city centre, Bukit Bintang, Publika, Solaris, Hartamas, Bangsar and The Curve in Petaling Jaya.
The Umno secretary-general said Putrajaya was also considering deploying military assets to popular tourist and shopping zones to secure the locations if necessary.
Malaysian police were put on red alert following the bombings in Jakarta three days ago that involved at least seven blasts and left seven people dead.
The Jakarta blasts followed a suicide bombing in Istanbul, Turkey, on Tuesday that killed 10 people, all of whom were Germans, which officials reportedly blamed on the Islamic State.
