KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 — The police have detained a Malaysian and his Thai wife, suspected to be international drug traffickers, and uncovered a drug-processing laboratory at their luxury condominium in Sri Petaling here.

In a raid at the condominium last Saturday, a police team also seized over 16,600 grams of syabu meant for distribution to the addict population in the southern states.

The drugs were worth RM1.8 million at street value.

Kuala Lumpur Narcotic CID chief ACP Wan Abdullah Ishak said the 35-year-old man was nabbed while driving a Mercedes Benz car in Jalan Bandar Baru, Sri Petaling about 4.30pm.  “Following interrogation, the suspect accompanied the police to a luxury condominium in Sri Petaling where his 33-year-old Thai wife was taken into custody on the same day.

“In the course of our investigations, we seized a drug processing laboratory and storing facility at a room in the condominium, and several drug-processing paraphernalia.

“The police also seized what was suspected to be syabu weighing 15,665 grams, liquid syabu weighing 945 grams, and liquid chemical Acetone weighing 4,000 grams,” he told reporters here today.

He said initial investigations revealed the couple had been active over the past three months supplying syabu to several southern states and Pahang.

Wan Abdullah said the couple had a two-year-old son who did not stay with them.

The couple have been remanded for a week, beginning Saturday to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. They face the mandatory death penalty upon conviction under the Act. — Bernama
