KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 — The police were forced to call Charles Suresh Morais' lawyer to record his statement this week after his client 'ran away' from the authorities, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) said today.

Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the police expect to meet lawyer Americk Sidhu either by today or tomorrow.

"As Charles is unable to make it for the meeting itself, we are forced to call his lawyer. We want to know the discussions he had with Charles," Khalid said in a press conference at the Bukit Aman police headquarters here.

"Due to the seriousness of the issue, we also like to hear it from the lawyer who helped him to make this SD. We expect to meet him today or tomorrow as he might be busy dealing with court matters."

In his 18-page statutory declaration (SD) signed last Wednesday, Charles Suresh said that his late brother, slain deputy public prosecutor Kevin, had before his death sent him a pen drive with contents that “clearly and unequivocally reveal the investigations Kevin had been tasked with just before his untimely death which implicate certain personalities who currently walk the corridors of power in Malaysia”.

Charles Suresh claimed the pen drive is currently in the US for safekeeping.

He also alleged that his brother was likely killed because he knew too much about those in power.

Police are now trying to trace Charles Suresh, believed to have returned to the US where he is based.
