KAJANG, Oct 22 — After being on the run for nine years, a gang leader known for his string of violent crimes including two murders, an attempted murder, extortion and armed robberies was finally captured by police during a raid on Tuesday night.
The gang leader, aged 35, and six accomplices, aged between 22 and 35, including a Myanmar national, were arrested in Kajang and Cheras in two separate raids from intelligence gathered on the gang since April.
Kajang police chief ACP Willey Richard said the seven were picked up from houses rented by them.
“A police team first raided a house in Batu 12, Kajang, where four suspects, including the leader, were arrested,” he said.
“Based on information obtained in the first raid, police moved in on the other suspects in Balakong.”
Richard said the gang was known for its involvement in violent crimes, with offences ranging from armed robberies and extortion to murder.
“Police seized a Samurai sword and five parang believed to have been used for committing the crimes,” he said.
Three of the other six suspects had records for drug-related offences
With the arrest of the seven men, police believe they have solved two murder cases which took place in Sungai Long and Taming Jaya in April and July.
“The gang has been operating for a few years and the leader has been on the police wanted list since 2006,” he said.
“Investigations are under way to determine if the gang was also involved in drug trafficking as several members had drug-related criminal records.”
Richard said police intensified the search for the suspects after the two murders took place.
In the first incident on April 4, the body of an unidentified man was discovered in Sungai Long with multiple injuries and slash wounds.
Three months later, the body of another unidentified man was found in a pond in Taming Jaya. He was believed to have been murdered elsewhere.
“We believe the seven men were involved in the murders, whuch were possibly motivated by internal gang problems,” Richard said.
