KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 ― The federal government’s delay in answering parliamentary questions on the RM2.6 billion deposited in the prime minister’s accounts violates the principles of the legislature, DAP said today.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng made the assertion today after the Finance Ministry stated that it would only provide a response at a later, unspecified date.
“This is against parliamentary convention. We want to know when the answer will be given related to the RM2.6 billion donation scandal.
“We hope the government doesn't try to cover up or delay the answers on purpose. The Parliament is the highest institution in the country, you can't play with the Parliament like this as it doesn't follow conventions,” he told reporters in a press conference at the Dewan Rakyat lobby.
Lim added that it was essential for Putrajaya to explain the RM2.6 billion donation controversy as it was a matter of national interest.
“This is a serious issue not just for Malaysians but overseas as well because it has resulted in affecting the economic crisis here.
“When a question is asked, a proper written answer must be given if it is not answered orally but what we see now is the BN government playing around with answers, he said referring to the Barisan Nasional ruling coalition.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said had said in a written reply today to Lim and another DAP lawmaker that Putrajaya will address all questions related to the donation some time during the current meeting.
In his question, Lim had asked Najib to reveal the source of the RM2.6 billion in his personal bank accounts, how the money was used and who were the recipients.
He had also asked if Najib had paid any taxes for the sum or made any form of official declaration, how much funds remained, as well as details of the accounts where the money was parked.
