PUTRAJAYA, Aug 27 ― A smarter society should balance up between knowledge advancement and technology with online responsibility, said Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari.
He said people should be aware of cyber threats when they are engaged in cyber space.
"It's important for Internet users to act responsibly while on the net to manage any cyber threats," he said when opening a symposium on 'Empowering A Smart Digital Nation' in conjunction with KL Converge 2015 here today.
However, Jailani noted that the Internet was not all doom and gloom as the benefits people were reaping from living in a connected world far outweighed the risks.
Connectivity, he said, was increasingly reshaping the world and in many ways was defining the way people live, work and play.
Jailani further said that the communications and multimedia industry played a pivotal role in enabling Malaysia's transition towards a smart digital nation.
"A smart digital nation with the right framework and implementation plan will accelerate the adoption of the Internet of Things technology to improve efficiency, productivity and uplift quality of life as well as connecting unconnected communities," he said.
The Internet of Things refers to a scenario in which objects, animals or people are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.
Present were International Telecommunications Union secretary-general Houlin Zhao and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Halim Shafie.
The symposium provided a platform for experts, professionals and decision makers from the government, industry and academia to share knowledge, ideas and insights on fostering convergence and digital inclusion towards a smart digital nation.
The event was organised by MCMC in collaboration with Multimedia University of Malaysia. ― Bernama
