KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 — Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid questioned today if the Penang government was “playing politics” after the state abruptly changed its Merdeka Day slogan from the initial “Bersih” to “Bersih, Cekap, Amanah”.

The minister said the state created confusion with the last-minute switch, which he said was ordered only after the Penang Education Department issued a directive banning students from participating in the state’s Merdeka Day parade due to the use of the word “Bersih” in the slogan.

“In their backdrop and banner, they put ‘In conjunction with Merdeka Day’, they used the word ‘Bersih’ only, but then Education Ministry of Penang released a directive to the students in Penang…. because firstly, we don’t understand what they mean by Bersih because at the time, there were other Bersih as well so we were confused.

“But then yesterday, they released ‘Bersih, Cekap, Amanah,’ so who is playing politics now?” he said during the launching of the Kepong Umno delegates meeting.
