KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 — Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz, the eldest son of the late PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, has denied rumours of his plan to join Harapan Baru (HB) that spread after his photograph with members from the movement surfaced online.
Nik Omar told English daily The Star that he was photographed with HB members because he had been invited to give a talk at a function, during which he said there were no discussion of his potential participation in HB.
“There was never any talk of me joining HB or anything that has to do with HB. I was there to talk about the life of my father to the audience, “ he said.
The photograph of him with Kelantan HB protem committee chairman Datuk Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Abdullah and PAS veteran Ahmad Awang emerged on social media over the weekend and spread like wildfire, sparking rumours of him joining HB.
Despite the denial, however, Wan Abdul Rahim had reportedly told the English daily that Nik Omar will join HB next month.
“I can confirm that he will eventually join HB, but the timing is not good as he is still in bereavement due to the demise of his father,” he said.
Nik Abdul Aziz, who was formerly Kelantan’s mentri besar, passed away in February this year while still serving as PAS spiritual adviser.
Nik Omar’s younger brother PAS Youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz had previously condemned HB for using their father’s name to further their agenda.
