KUALA SELANGOR, June 5 — PAS’ Datuk Mahfuz Omar was confident that ally DAP will be able to accept the newly-appointed ulama-dominated leadership, and business will continue as usual regardless of who helms the leadership.

“I believe the new leadership can work with DAP and PKR, and I believe DAP will accept this new leadership,” said Mahfuz, who held the post of PAS information chief before the elections.

Despite losing in the vice-president race, the Pokok Sena MP was full of praises today for the new line-up dominated by the ulama, or the clergy faction.

“This is the most proper and wisest result and for PAS to become even greater in the future. Congratulations to the winners,” a seemingly elated Mahfuz told reporters.

DAP is currently PAS’ harshest critic in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) pact, and had recently severed all working relationship with the party’s president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang after he insisted on his bid for hudud, even at the cost of joining hands with political nemesis Umno.

Two days ago, PAS’ powerful clergy wing approved an emergency motion calling on the Islamist party to sever ties with the DAP, but still remaining in the PR federal opposition pact.

The motion, passed unanimously by the wing’s over 600 members, was reminiscent of a similar resolution made months ago by the top leadership of the DAP to cut all ties with Abdul Hadi, but remain in PR.

The motion is expected to be tabled in the party’s main muktamar here tomorrow.
