PETALING JAYA, Oct 9 — Three thieves breaking into a pick-up truck were stunned when they found two police patrol cars surrounded them early yesterday morning.

Residents at the Tiara condominium in Kelana Jaya had alerted the police when they saw the trio breaking into the truck.

Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Azmi Abu Kassim said two mobile patrol vehicles (MPVs) arrived at the scene within five minutes and spotted the men, believed to be in their 20s and 30s.

“Two of the suspects were seated in a car parked close to the pick-up truck while the third was breaking into the pick-up truck,” he said.

On seeing the police, the third man quickly got into the car, which sped off and rammed into the police cars but managed to drive off.

One of the policeman fired several shots at the car, forcing the driver to stop.

Azmi said police arrested the driver  and another suspect who surrendered after he was shot in the leg, but the third suspect managed to escape by foot.

“Police have launched a manhunt to track him down,” he said.

One of the suspects had six criminal records for theft and robbery.

Azmi said the car used by the suspects was reported stolen recently.

“The suspect who was shot was admitted to University Malaya Medical Centre and is in a stable condition,” he said.

In a separate case, city police arrested a 40-year-old robbery suspect after a 15km high-speed chase on Tuesday night.

City deputy CID Chief ACP Khairi Ahrasa said a police MPV unit had signalled a car to pull over in Jalan Kuching after police suspected the car was stolen.

“The suspect sped off towards Jalan Kinabalu. As the chase entered Jalan Loke Yew, police fired a warning shot but the man refused to stop,” he said.

“The officer fired another shot which hit one of the tyres and the car finally stopped.”

Polie found housebreaking tools, gloves, a mask and firecrackers in the car.

“We are investigating him for theft and also for having explosive items.”

Khairi said the suspect was under remand for seven days to facilitate investigations.
