KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — PKR’s top leadership committee said today that it regrets the way that the Selangor palace treated Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s nomination for the Selangor mentri besar job.

In a strongly worded statement, the party’s central leadership committee announced its disappointment in a statement after an emergency meeting earlier today, having found out that party deputy president Azmin Ali had been picked for the post.

PKR and its ally DAP had nominated only Wan Azizah for the job to lead the country’s richest state.

“The committee also does not agree with the way the palace dealt with the process of nomination which involved Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to the point where she was not called upon even though she had the support of a clear majority,” it said.

She had met with the requirements for the post with a majority of 30 assemblymen supporting her, it added.

“The committee is of the opinion that the process of approving the appointment of the Selangor mentri besar is not in accordance with the spirit of the Selangor constitution and is against the principle of a parliamentary democracy. It also stains the integrity of the institution of parliamentary democracy,” the statement said.

The process, which did not accord with the spirit of the law, should not be made a precedent, it added.

Still, the committee considered the need to resolve issue of appointment and decided to respect Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah’s decision to withdraw, it said.
