KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 — Sedition trials will continue for PKR’s Chua Tian Chang and activist Hishamuddin Rais, as the High Court today rejected a second application to dismiss charges against them.
Judge Kamardin Hashim rejected the application on the grounds that the Court of Appeal has previously ruled that the Sedition Act of 1948 is constitutional.
Chua’s (popularly known as Tian Chua) trial will start on August, whereas Hishamuddin’s trial begins next week.
Last year, Tian Chua, Hishammuddin and Adam Adli Abdul Halim were charged with sedition for their speeches at Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly hall on May 13.
If convicted, they faced a RM5,000 fine or jail up to five years under Section 4(1)(b), and Chua might lose his Batu parliamentary seat.
Earlier on February this year, a High Court dismissed their attempt to strike out their charges.
Adam’s trial for prosecution ended on May 21, a decision is expected to be delivered on June 24.
