KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 15 — Starting this year, the Terengganu government is limiting the appointments of local councillors to two terms (or four years), said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said.

He said councillors, including mayors, presidents and members, could seek reappointment after the break in service.

“We will appoint a councillor for two terms. However, in isolated cases, where the service of the individual is necessary, an extension can be made with the approval of the menteri besar.

“This condition should have been implemented several years ago but it was not enforced. We will do so from this year so as to get fresh inputs from the new faces,” he told reporters after the members of the Kuala Terengganu City Council were sworn in for the 2014/2015 term at Wisma Darul Iman, here, today.

Datuk Adzlan Mohd Dagang was reappointed president of the city council.

Adzlan, 60, who hails from Kuala Terengganu, was appointed for the third term (into his fifth year) after being first appointed in 2010.

He heads a list of seven presidents of local councils who were retained. The other six are Mustafa Khalid (Kemaman), Mohd Zulkifli Abu Bakar (Dungun), Ibrahim Mohamad (Besut), Talaha Ali (Hulu Terengganu), Zulkifli Ali (Marang) and Samiun Salleh (Setiu). — Bernama
