KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 — A fisheries company director was jailed three days and fined a total of RM200,000 by the Sessions Court here today after he pleaded guilty to giving sums totalling RM250,000 to a man purportedly to be given as bribes to a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency officer for the release of two boats belonging to him.
Judge Rosbiahanin Arifin handed down the punishment to Choh Chaw Khiang, 41, after the accused changed his plea from not guilty to guilty to three alternative charges on the case.
She ordered him to be jailed a day on each of the count from today and face an additional 15 months’ jail if he defaulted on the fines.
The accused had offered the bribes in the amounts of RM100,000 twice and RM50,000 which were handed to one Arman Alies allegedly to be given to a senior MMEA officer so that the two boats, which had been detained for offences under the Fisheries Act 1985, could be released.
He had committed the bribery offences between May 23, 2013 and June 8, 2013 at Hotel Concorde here and in Restoran Dine All Day Dining, Hotel Sri Petaling, Bandar Baru Sri Petaling.
The accused was represented by counsel A. Vasudevan while Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission prosecuting officer Mohd Nur Lokman Samingan prosecuted. — Bernama
