KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 — The government will table a study on improving the security service sector, including attracting more locals to work as security guards.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the study would cover factors like insurance, welfare benefits and other facilities that could be extended to local security guards as these were felt apt in keeping with the changing times.

“This matter (security service) has been raised several times in the Dewan Rakyat. We are studying all the factors involved to see whether they are implementable.

“The study will also cover the legal aspects where this has been discussed with the ministry’s security unit, to look at the law that was formulated in 1971, hence it could be irrelevant in this present era. Times have changed.”

Wan Junaidi said this in rely to a supplementary question from Senaor Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam in the Dewan Negara, here, today.

Wan Junaidi said to date, 233,023 locals and 6,746 Nepalese were employed as security guards by several security service companies nationwide.

He said the Home Ministry viewed seriously the issue of security companies hiring illegals as security guards.

The deputy minister said some security companies hired illegals in order to make big profits by avoiding paying insurance, Socso contributions and other welfare benefits, as well as the minimum salary of RM900 set. — Bernama
