KUCHING, Oct 28 — Fires in Sarawak resulted in property losses of almost RM60 million despite fewer distress calls as of September this year, according to the Fire and Rescue department.
State director Nor Hisham Mohammad said the figure recorded an increase, compared to RM42,276,000 in the same period last year.
“The department received 1,602 distress calls compared to 1,625 in the same period last year,” he told Bernama here today.
According to him, most of the incidents were due to old wiring.
“Because their economy has improved, the community could afford to buy electrical items such as television and refrigerators which resulted in additional power consumption that put a burden on the old wirings in their houses,” he said.
Nor Hisham said the department would continue carrying out fire safety awareness campaigns for the public. — Bernama
