PETALING JAYA, Oct 14 — More than 10 MIC members who contested at the recent branch and divisional polls are bankrupts.

Party secretary-general A. Sakthivel said the party would take action against those concerned.

“We cannot simply act against a member. We need to study all the documents before making a decision and will decide on a case-to-case basis,” he said.

“The party is very clear on the issue. No bankrupt can hold a post.“We have to ascertain when they handed in their nomination paper and when they were declared bankrupt.”

Sakthivel said the party needs to get evidence before acting against any member.

“We are planning to compile all the cases before we start looking into them.

“We have not decided what action to take but one thing is for sure, none of the members will be allowed to hold any kind of post if they are bankrupt.”

However, Sakthivel said members must be given a chance to defend themselves before any type of action is taken.

The Malay Mail discovered that the newly-elected Kota Raja division chief S. Sandiranshegran, better known as “Taman Maznah Chandran”, was indeed bankrupt.

A check with the Insolvency Department confirmed this.

Sandiranshegran, who defeated incumbent R.S. Maniam by three votes, has been bankrupt since January 2010.

“Some six months later, I paid the RM53,000 owed to the bank. The problem arose after I stood as a guarantor for a car. I am now working with my lawyers to resolve the issue,” he said.

“I don’t understand why I am still declared bankrupt even though I have paid up.”

Sandiranshegran said if there is a problem, he will let party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel deal with it.
