BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 20 — The police shot and wounded a machete-wielding suspect in self-defence after he ignored repeated warnings to surrender and tried to attack them at Bukit Teh, here this morning.
“The man, in his 30s, is wanted under the Special Preventive Measures 1985 (Dangerous Drugs Act 1952) and was discovered in his house about 9.45 am. He tried to attack the team with two machetes when we surrounded the house. Even warnings shots fired in the air didn’t stop him,” Penang CID chief SAC Mazlan Kesah said here today.
Mazlan said the man stubbornly rushed at the team with the machetes and they had to fire two shots in his direction, which hit the suspect’s legs.
The man was reported to be stable at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital and has three previous criminal records for drugs and theft.
“He has been remanded under Section 307 of the Penal Code,” he added. — Bernama
