KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 — Funerals are a time for loved ones to come together to pay their last respects to the deceased.
One UK woman, however, decided she was going to ‘go out in style’, having dancers perform at her own funeral.
Barmaid Sandie Woods, 65, surprised mourners when her funeral service turned into a flash mob as four dancers moved to the tune of Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust.
Woods passed away on September 19, 2022, due to tongue cancer. She was one of the thousands of people who contracted Hepatitis C from being given infected blood in the 70s and 80s.
The performance at her funeral was actually all her own planning, wanting to cheer up friends and family from their gloomy mood.
Woods also organised her funeral (which costed over RM52,000) with a custom-made coffin with sparkling shoes and a white broomstick-riding witch on top carried away by a horse-drawn hearse.
“She was one of a kind, so she left the world how she lived it, being herself,” Wood’s close friend Sam Ryalls, 43, told The Sun.
“She wanted everyone to remember her funeral but not for a sad reason.
Ryalls struggled to find a dance troupe that would perform at a funeral, saying most were uncomfortable with the idea until she met the burlesque group The Flaming Feathers.
“We’ve been gigging for 12 years and we’ve never done a funeral.” owner Claire Phillips, 36, told BBC.
“We had to pretend to be part of the guests with people crying and grieving and then get up, whip our coats off and rock out.”
“So it was scary, but a memory that we’ll never forget. And it was a lot of fun.”
