KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — Six countries and two All-Star teams have confirmed their participation in the 3rd Axiata Cup Badminton Championship from Nov 27 to Dec 7 at two venues, Indonesia and Malaysia. 

The participating countries are Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Philippines besides two All-Star teams from Europe and Asia, said Axiata Group chief executive officer, Datuk Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim. 

He said the preliminary rounds would be held at Arena Britama, Kelapa Gading, Jakarta, from Nov 27 to Dec 3 and the semi-finals and finals at Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras.

“The championship was introduced in 2012 to feature new talents and offered the biggest prize money in the world for team badminton,” he told a media conference on the championship here today.

The competition which offers total cash prize of USD1 million (RM3.3 million) is organised by Axiata Group with the cooperation of Badminton Confederation of Asia and Total Sports Asia.

The four categories of the championship are men’s and women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.

The winning team will bring home USD400,000 (RM1.3 milion), runner-up USD200,000 (RM656,999), third place USD150,000 (RM492,749), fourth place USD 100,000 (RM328,499).

The fifth placed gets USD60,000 (RM197,0990 , sixth USD40,000 (RM131,399), seventh USD30,000 (RM98,549) and USD20,000 (RM65,699) for the eighth place. 

In the first championship in 2012, Garuda Indonesia emerged champions before the national badminton squad clinched the championship after defeating Thailand 3-1 in the final at Cheras Badminton Stadium last year. — Bernama
