KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 — The two trains on the Mass Rail Transit (MRT) Kajang Line malfunctioned yesterday due to an issue with its air pressure system, Rapid Rail said today.

Rapid Rail said part of the safety features of the MRT trains is that they will stop if there are any disturbances in the system or if any abnormal activity is detected.

“Trains number 40 and 54 experienced problems with the air pressure system at Tun Razak Exchange Station heading to Kajang at 6.38pm and at Pasar Seni Station heading to Kajang at 7.34pm.

“Part of the safety features of Kajang Line MRT trains is that low air pressure will cause the train to stop because the main function of the air pressure system is to implement the braking system and supply air for the suspension system,” it said in a statement.

Separately at 8.26pm, train number 4 from Taman Pertama station heading towards Kajang stopped because its obstacle detection system was activated, causing all trains to have slight delays and traffic.

“This disruption caused some stations to experience congestion on the platform as all train movements had to move at a slower speed,” it added.

Rapid Rail said its engineering team began immediate repairs to restore operations to normal as soon as possible.

“The trains involved have been taken out of service and will be carefully inspected so that the same thing does not happen again,” it said.

According to the statement, operations on the MRT Kajang Line were restored to normal frequency at 9.01pm yesterday.

Hundreds of commuters in the Klang Valley were stranded along the MRT Kajang line during the evening rush hour yesterday.

This was not the first time residents in KL and Selangor had faced a massive breakdown in public mass transport.

Last November, 16 stations along the Kelana Jaya LRT line shut down for a week due to issues in its automatic train control (ATC) system.
