KEMAMAN, May 25 — Former Kemaman MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek has announced his resignation as the head of the Gong Chengal Umno Branch.

The deputy head, Datuk Mustaffa Ab Rahman, will be the acting chief, he said to reporters at the annual general meeting of the branch here yesterday.

Ahmad Shabery, who is the former Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, said he quit the post to enable younger people to lead the branch and move up the ranks.

He also said that he would eventually give up the post of deputy divisional chief of the party as well.

He said Umno should seriously consider endearing itself to young voters and also ensure that young members in the party were allowed to assume greater responsibility and posts. — Bernama
