KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 — Tan Sri Robert Kuok is not funding opposition party DAP or a news portal accused of plotting to remove the prime minister from office, the business magnate said when rejecting allegations made by blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin.
In a statement from his office, the billionaire emphatically denied the claims contained in a series of articles published on the blogger's website.
Among others, Raja Petra accused Kuok of financing The Malaysian Insight news portal, of engineering the removal of the ruling Barisan Nasional government, and of seeking to install a Chinese government in Malaysia.
“These allegations are untrue, and Mr Robert Kuok expressly denies them in their entirety,” said a statement from the magnate’s office.
The statement added that Kuok deeply appreciated the opportunities given to him in Malaysia and recognised the contributions of all Malaysians towards the country's development.
Kuok's office added that he considered the allegations contained in the blogger's articles to be seriously defamatory, but did not expressly say if he will initiate action against Raja Petra.
“Mr Kuok holds in the highest esteem the leaders of Malaysia who have throughout their lives done everything they can to contribute to the well-being of Malaysians,” the statement added.
Since the blogger's allegation first emerged, Umno leaders have begun criticising Kuok.
Among others, they have insinuated that Kuok was ungrateful for the wealth he built from his previous monopoly on Malaysia's sugar supply that earned him his “sugar king” moniker, and of cowardice for allegedly funding parties seeking to unseat the ruling government.
