JOHOR BARU, Oct 17 — A man who was reported to have tried to commit suicide by hanging from a hotel room window here yesterday, was actually part of a three-member robbery gang.
Seri Alam Police chief, Supt Jokhiri Abd Aziz said the incident which went viral in the social media occurred when police raided a room occupied by three suspects aged 24 and 25 years, in Taman Scientex, Pasir Gudang, at 1.15pm One of them was caught in the room after a struggle with a police officer.
Another jumped from the third floor through a window, causing him to break his leg and hurt his backbone.
“The third suspect tried to escape by hanging on to the window sill and the building edge, and then jumped on to the first floor roof of the hotel, but was hurt in his shoulder.
“The two arrested are receiving medical treatment at Sultan Ismail Hospital,” he said in a statement, here today.
Jokhiri said investigation found that one of the three men was a local, another a Filipino and the third an Indonesian.
Checks in the hotel room also found two parangs, a knife, a hammer, four handphones, two watches, three motorcycle keys and a helmet.
Also seized was a Modenas Dinamik motorcycle with false registration number which was reported missing in Taman Scientex, Pasir Gudang.
“The gang is suspected to have been involved in robberies at budget hotels and stealing vehicles in Johor Baru area since three months ago.
“They have admitted to at least seven cases in Seri Alam area,” he said.
The suspects would be remanded to aid investigation under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery, Section 379A of the Penal Code for theft of a motor vehicle and Section 6(1)(c) of Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having valid travel documents. — Bernama
