KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — The possibility that a rusty cable caused the crane hook to snap and smash a car, killing woman driver Chin Khoon Sing along Jalan Raja Chulan has emerged.
The revelation was made by workers at the site when Malay Mail visited the area yesterday.
A security personnel there said while no mishaps occurred at the site before, one possible cause which could have lead to the incident was the cable could have been rusty.
The worker only wished to be known as Tiru, 44, said: “I think a cable was rusty and snapped,” he said.
He said workers had been informed by the management that work at the site had been suspended.
Another Indonesian labourer, Celos Tim, 22, said the incident was very unfortunate. He however said workers checked equipment at the site daily.
“I am not sure how the cable gave way yesterday. Those metal cables can generally withstand massive weight,” he said.
Construction site worker Lang Luqman, 25, from Indonesia, said he was informed that operations had been suspended when he came to work yesterday.
“Our bosses told us to go have breakfast and head home. They said the earliest work would resume would be Monday,” he said.
Traffic was normal in the area yesterday. The arm of the crane was still dangling over the road. From below the remaining parts of the snapped supporting cable could also be seen.
The incident has jolted the public who are alarmed this could occur in a high-traffic area.
