JOHOR BARU, Aug 11 — A husband and wife were charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with neglecting a 14-year-old boy by causing him to suffer physical injury in Kampung Sungai Penderam, Seri Alam, here early this month.
Amirul Mishan, 38, was sentenced to three years’ jail after pleading guilty to the charge, while his wife Siti Farhana Adam, 28, claimed trial.
Fisherman Amirul was alleged to have caused physical injury to the 14 year-old boy, who is also his brother-in-law, by kicking his genitals.
The offence was allegedly committed at a house in Jalan Desa Pingitan, Kampung Sungai Penderam, Seri Alam, here, about 4pm on August 3.
Siti Farhana, a housewife allegedly caused physical injury to her own brother by splashing boiling water to the boy’s stomach at the same location, at about 1pm on August 1.
The charge under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 carries a maximum imprisonment of 10 years or a fine up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Fithril Hakim Ab Jalil appeared for the prosecution, while both the accused were unrepresented.
Magistrate Mohd Azlan Shah Alias ordered the jail sentence to begin today and allowed Siti Farhana bail of RM10,000 with one surety on condition that she did not bother her brother.
Mohd Azlan Shah also set September 8 for mention of the case. — Bernama
