KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — Umno Youth branch leader Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi has left his party, saying it would be hypocritical for him to stay as he is currently involved with Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s new party.
Akhramsyah, who was head of Umno Youth’s Bendang Baru branch in Langkawi, said he has already submitted his resignation to Umno’s Bendang Baru branch and the Langkawi division.
“I would like to clarify a recent media report that I was still an Umno member and office bearer at the ‘Cawangan’ level and that I had no intentions of leaving Umno despite being involved in the formation of a new party.
“This report gives an erroneous impression, and omitted key elements of my statement. I had at the same time mentioned that at the time of my statement, that it would be hypocritical for me to remain in Umno once I am involved in the new party and that I was still awaiting advice on actions to be taken prior to the submission of the application to form the new party to the ROS (Registrar of Societies),” he said in a statement to Malay Mail Online.
Akhramsyah was referring to a New Straits Times Online report which had quoted him as saying that he had no intentions of leaving Umno despite being involved in the new party headed by former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin.
“The omission of these statements have obviously been misconstrued, hence, I am stating here my full commitment to the formation of the new party, and to remove further doubt, have submitted my resignation to my Cawangan Bendang Baru dan Bahagian Langkawi, effective immediately,” he added.
It has been confirmed that Muhyiddin will be the president of the new political party backed by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and will be officially registering the party with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) tomorrow.
The pro tem committee members for the new party are Dr Mahathir, Muhyiddin, Anina Saadudin, Gabungan Ketua Cawangan Malaysia president Kamarul Azman Habibur Rahman, student group Challenger leader Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Akramsyah.
