KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 — The Skippy brand peanut butter distributed here does not contain metal shavings that triggered a recall in the US, the Health Ministry confirmed today.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah added that his ministry was prohibiting the distributors from bringing in any of the peanut butter that is of the same batch as that contaminated.
“DKSH, the company that imports and distributes Skippy Peanut Butter in Malaysia, also confirms that the product involved that was called back in the United States was only distributed to seven states in the United States as mentioned above and the product in question was not distributed to other countries, including Malaysia,” he said in a statement today.
According to TIME, nearly one tonne of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy peanut butter was recalled last Thursday due to possible metal shavings present in its 16.3 ounce jars.
During a routine cleaning, Hormel Foods discovered that some 153 cases produced in its Little Rock, Arkansas plant that was meant to be destroyed somehow managed to make its way to distribution centres instead.
According to Hormel, no injuries have been reported but swallowing metal objects longer than 7mm can cause choking and gastric perforation.
The tainted peanut butter was reportedly sent to distribution centres which serve Target, Walmart and Publix stores in seven states namely Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware and Arkansas.
