KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today asked lawmakers, groups and the public to stop visiting its premises to show solidarity with the agency amid an apparent crackdown.

The commission said that while it appreciated the moral support, these have been adequate and that it would rather the public offer its cooperation to the agency in the war on graft and abstaining from corrupt activities.

“... Even though the MACC appreciates the support and actions, the MACC requests their cooperation in no longer continuing such action due to concerns that they will create an uncomfortable atmosphere for the public with dealings at government offices...” it said in a statement today.

On Thursday, DAP parliamentary leader, Lim Kit Siang, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Gerakan Harapan Baru chief Mohamad Sabu and other opposition MPs visited the MACC’s headquarters in Putrajaya in a show of support for the agency.

They had visited the commission following an apparent crackdown by the police over alleged leak of information from an investigation into a state-owned firm.

Following the visit, two senior MACC officials were immediately transferred out from the agency and to the Prime Minister’s Department.
