KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan confirmed today his appointment as PAS’ new secretary-general, replacing Datuk Mustafa Ali, who has been offered the party’s elections director post.

Takiyuddin also said ulama wing member Nasruddin Hassan has been appointed the new PAS information chief, replacing Datuk Mahfuz Omar, following the clerics’ sweeping victory in the recent Islamist party’s election.

“My post and Nasruddin’s post is confirmed, but Datuk Mustafa’s appointment is yet to be confirmed,” Takiyuddin, who is also Kota Baru MP, told Malay Mail Online when contacted.

Takiyuddin was also previously the Islamist party’s assistant secretary-general and a former Kelantan state executive councillor.

He said that a Kelantan exco member has been nominated for the treasurer’s post, adding that this, however, might change, refusing to divulge the identity of the current nominee.

“One Kelantan exco members has been nominated for treasurer but I am not too sure as there might be changes..

“Datuk Mustafa’s post as the elections director along with few other positions have also not been confirmed because after being appointed, the appointee has inform of their approval and this has not been done yet, “he added.

Takiyuddin said that the full list of confirmed appointees will be released on June 21.

Earlier today, news portal The Malaysian Insider (TMI) reported a party source as saying that Mustafa has been “demoted” to the position of elections director, replacing Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli.

It reported the source saying that PAS is deferring the announcement however, for fear that the appointed leaders may reject their posts.

“Efforts to coax them are still ongoing, because there are concerns Mustafa will not accept the post of elections director. Mustafa had previously said he would only accept the secretary-general position.

“That is why deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man announced on Wednesday that PAS will only reveal the appointed central working committee members on June 21,” the PAS leader reportedly told TMI on condition of anonymity.
