KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 — The Universiti Malaya (UM) student council demanded today the resignation of the national police chief over alleged police brutality at protests against the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

PMUM president Mohd Ammar Atan said his friend Khairol Najib Hashim from UM was beaten by police officers at the anti-GST protest at the Customs Complex in Kelana Jaya on Monday.

He also claimed that two of his other friends — Adam Fistival Wilfried from UM and Yazid Khairul Azman from International Islamic University Malaysia — were beaten in police custody after they were arrested yesterday for protesting against the arrest of 25 people at the earlier anti-GST demonstration.

“We want to reject the abuse of power by the PDRM and demand that Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar take responsibility for all forms of oppression against the accused,” Ammar told reporters at the Dang Wangi police headquarters after lodging a police report, using the Malay initials for the Royal Malaysian Police.

UM student Safwan Shamsuddin, who was at the same press conference, said Khairol was among those arrested for protesting against the GST at the Customs Complex in Kelana Jaya.

The broad based consumption tax is set to be implemented at a flat rate of six per cent next Wednesday.
