KAJANG, March 3 — The Sessions Court here today set May 20 as the new case mention date for the sedition trial of Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) president Abdullah Zaik Abd Rahman pending the Federal Court’s decision on a related case.

The postponement of Abdullah Zaik’s case, which has been postponed twice before, is pending the apex court’s decision on Assoc Prof Dr Azmi Sharom’s challenge of the constitutionality of the Sedition Act 1948 after the law lecturer was charged with sedition over a remark made in an article published on Malay Mail Online.

“It is not unusual to set a new case mention date as we’ve asked for an adjournment of the case in November last year pending Professor Azmi Sharom’s case,” Abdullah Zaik’s lawyer Azad Bashir Abdul Kariem Bashir told Malay Mail Online.

On May 6, Abdullah Zaik allegedly wrote on Isma’s website that the influx of Chinese migrants into Tanah Melayu had been “a mistake” which must be rectified.

He allegedly said that the ethnic group was considered intruders into Malay land and had been brought by British colonialists to oppress the Malays.

Infuriated by the remarks, lawmakers from both the DAP and MCA had filed police reports against Isma.
