PETALING JAYA, Jan 5 — MIC vice-president Datuk M. Saravanan said he will take matters into his own hands and meet with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) today to obtain clarification on allegations of irregularities concerning the party’s elections.

He said MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel had not been forthcoming with party members after RoS, had on Dec 5 last year, given MIC 30 days to complete the re-election process at its branches, 60 days to rectify the problems within the division, and 90 days to solve the Central Working Committee (CWC) and vice-presidential issues.

Saravanan also claimed Palanivel has not been reachable for the past 15 days as his efforts to seek clarification proved futile.

“I am very disappointed with his attitude. For the sake of the party, I will meet with RoS tomorrow (today),” he said.

“(Party deputy president) Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam and I are lost ... I am really fed-up (with this).”

Saravanan said Palanivel and Subramaniam were supposed to meet with the RoS but have not done so to date.

He said he would inform all party members on the outcome of his meeting with the RoS today.

“Following the meeting, I will arrange an emergency general meeting to discuss the next course of action,” he said.

“600,000 members are left in the dark and do not know what is going on.”

Saravanan said he was further dismayed after Palanivel issued a media statement regarding the matter yesterday without the consultation of the party’s leadership.

“Who gave him (Palanivel) the power to appoint lawyers? What is the cost of appointing these lawyers? The deputy president and vice-presidents have the right to know the details,” he said.

“I do not question his right of appointing the party leadership, but many members are unhappy with his (Palanivel) ways.”

While Saravanan did not question the changes made to the CWC, he stressed Palanivel did not have the power to replace members within the party’s disciplinary committee.

Wanita MIC chief Mohana Muniandy was supportive of Saravanan’s effort to meet the RoS today.

“I will try to be there. Several members from the Wanita and Youth wings will join Savaranan as we all want to know what is going on,” she said.

“During the CWC meeting on Dec 18 last year, Palanivel promised to meet the RoS but it never happened. He also said he would form a committee to look into the issue but that also did not materialise.”

Mohana said the members have the right to know.

“It is not healthy for the party to be kept in the dark,” she said.
