KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Two workers who were missing following a construction accident at a MRT works site near Kota Damansara last night are now confirmed dead, after their bodies were recovered from beneath the rubble today.
The discovery brings the death toll of yesterday’s accident to three.
“The bodies of the two remaining workers who were trapped beneath the span of the MRT guideway which had dislodged from its piers and fallen on the ground below at 8.30pm yesterday night have been recovered,” project owners MRT Corp said in a statement today,
The bodies of Mohamad Faruk Khan, 38, and Mohammad Alauddin Mollik, 34, were recovered at about 1.35pm today after the box girders that form the span were lifted at the worksite at the former Rubber Research Institute (RRI).
The bodies were sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for post mortem.
Earlier this morning, the body of Mohammad Elahi Hossain, aged 27, was recovered from the incident site.
The three Bangladeshi nationals were working on the 38-m long span weighing 650 tonnes when it was dislodged from a guideway under construction and fell to the ground below.
Today, MRT Corp said both it and Syarikat Muhibah Perniagaan dan Pembinaan Sdn Bhd (SMPP), the contractor for affected works package, have informed the Bangladesh High Commission of the deaths.
“MRT Corp and SMPP will make the necessary arrangements for the bodies to be repatriated to Bangladesh once the next of kin have been informed and consent is given by the High Commission,” it said.
MRT Corp chief executive Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid, who tendered his resignation today to take responsibility of the accident, said he will ensure SMPP does everything that it can to assist the families of the workers when they are in Malaysia.
Azhar also assured the public that MRT structures along the 51-kilometre alignment were built to specifications and that the public should be assured that they are safe.
This is the first fatal accident at an MRT construction site.
On June 24, a slab of metal fell from an MRT construction site in Pusat Bandar Damansara onto the main road and crushed the passenger side of the car. There were no passengers and the driver was unhurt.
