TELUK INTAN, May 31 — Datuk Mah Siew Keong tonight pledged co-operation with with Changkat Jong assemblyman Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin for the betterment of Teluk Intan.
“Thank you to Azhar. We will work together for Teluk Intan,” the newly-elected Teluk Intan MP said after winning the by-election.
As he thanked Azhar, the two raised each other’s hand to the cheers of Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders.
Changkat Jong, a rural Malay and Indian-majority seat, was won by Umno’s Azhar in the 2013 general election.
It is one of the two state assembly seats in Teluk Intan. The other, Chinese-majority Pasir Bedamar, was won by DAP’s Terence Naidu.
Earlier today, Mah noted that voter turnout in the pro-opposition Pasir Bedamar area far outnumbers locations with more BN supporters, saying it might be a possible indication of the final result.
When he said this at 11 am, nearly 50 per cent of voters had voted in Pasir Bedamar, compared to less than 20 per cent in Changkat Jong.
In his manifesto for the by-election, Mah had pledged to build a university for the town and get Unesco heritage listing for the Teluk Intan Leaning Tower.
Mah won against DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud with 20,157 votes to Dyana’s 19,919.
