TELUK INTAN, May 31 — The Election Commission (EC) today expressed bewilderment that only 66.7 per cent of registered voters here cast their ballots today, down 14 percentage points from the 13th general election last year.

According to EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, the number was also the second lowest for by-elections since the 2013 polls, behind only Bukit Gelugor.

“The weather was very good today. The traffic was not that bad. In terms of security, (it) was also fine,” Abdul Aziz said in a press conference here.

“There is no reason for voters to not vote. We really do not know why. We have to study (it) in detail.”

Earlier today, Abdul Aziz said his commission was targeting a turnout of no less than 70 per cent.

The EC said 40,236 of the 60,349 registered voters cast their ballots.

In the last election, 48,839 residents cast their votes.
