KUALA KANGSAR, May 29 — The people of Perak mourn the passing of Sultan Azlan Shah.
Behrang assemblyman Datuk Rusnah Kassim, a lawyer by profession, said Sultan Azlan’s passing was a great loss not only to the country but also the legal fraternity.
“He was an intelligent man and a good judge whose decisions were being used a precedents,” Rusnah said.
Former Perak menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin conveyed his condolences to the family.
“As state opposition leader, I would like to convey our condolences on the demise of Tuanku. May he rest in peace and be with his well guided people,” he said.
Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming expressed the party’s condolences to the Perak royal family.
“We pray the royal family are strong at this difficult hour. All DAP branches in Perak will fly their party flags half mast as a sign of respect,” said Nga, who is also Taiping MP.
He said the late Sultan will be remembered for his many landmark judgments on social justice which was made when he was Lord President.
“The late Sultan was also a defender of human rights as well as the rule of law,” he said.
Perak PAS Commissioner Razman Zakaria said Perakians feel a deep sense of loss for the late Sultan who did much for his subjects from the time he ascended the throne in 1989.
“As a sign of respect, PAS will temporarily cease party and by-election campaign activities until the burial ceremony is completed this afternoon.
Perak Tourism Association president Odzman Abdul Kadir said Sultan Azlan was an active supporter of state non-governmental organisations and he always encouraged them to give back to society.
Hawker Mohd Ali Abu Baytha, 52, who sells mee rebus said Sultan Azlan was close to the people.
“The Sultan’s chauffeur used to come to the stall in Jalan Bijih Timah at Ipoh Old Town for takeaways, but not since March last year as the Sultan had been unwell,” he said.
