KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 ― Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today extended his condolences to the Perak royal family on the demise of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah at the National Heart Institute here.
“I extend my condolences on the passing of His Royal Highness the 34th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Yussuf Izzuddin Shah. Al-Fatihah,” said the Prime Minister in his Facebook entry here.
Meanwhile, he said in a statement in Beijing that the late Sultan Azlan had served outstandingly during his tenure as Lord President.
Najib said he had instructed that the Malaysian flag be flown at half mast throughout the country during the burial tomorrow.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir announced the death of Sultan Azlah Shah, 86, live on TV1, Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) at 3.40pm today.
He passed away at 1.30pm and would be laid to rest at the Kuala Kangsar Royal Mausoleum after the Asar prayer tomorrow.
The lying-in-state of the remains of Sultan Azlan, who had ruled Perak for three decades since his installation on February 3, 1984, would be at the Throne Room of Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar for the people to pay their last respects.
Following the passing of the Sultan of Perak, Najib, who was on an official visit to China, would return to Malaysia tonight to pay his last respects.
A spokesman of the Prime Minister's Office said, Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor would return to Kuala Lumpur tonight shortly after attending a function in Beijing.
After paying his last respects to the late Sultan at Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar tomorrow, Najib and his wife would continue their six-day official visit to China which began yesterday in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. ― Bernama
