KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 — Police hope there would not be any trouble as protesters are expected to gather in various parts of the city today for the anti-Goods and Services Tax (GST) protest.
City police chief Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh, had said yesterday, he expected some 15,000 people to gather at KLCC, Sogo shopping mall, KL Sentral, Central Market, Masjid Jamek, Pudu Sentral and Dataran Maybank and hoped they would adhere to the rules and regulations agreed upon by the organisers and police.
“We have met them (organisers) on four occasions prior the rally and we hope they will stand by what has been agreed,” Mohmad said.
He said the parties concerned, organisers and police, have their roles to play.
“All parties, including the protestors, should respect each other.”
He said this would prevent any unwanted incident from taking place.
“Rally-goers should not bring along any weapons and please leave your children at home.”
He said the participants and organiser are not allowed to use any megaphones, make speeches and shout party slogans while walking to the Sultan Abdul Samad building from the various meeting points.
Mohmad also urged the public to avoid entering the city centre where protesters were planning to gather as the areas were expected to be congested.
“These are the known meeting points of the rally goers. They are expected to gather from noon onwards.”
The off limits areas for protesters, which have been agreed between the police and organisers, are the Dataran Merdeka field and podium area as renovation works are on-going.
Meanwhile, several roads in Petaling Jaya will be closed in conjunction with Labour Day celebration organised by the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC).
Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed said the roads that will be closed in stages will be along Jalan Timur from Jalan Sultan intersection in Federal Highway.
Arjunaidi said those who wanted to join in the rally should use Jalan Gasing or use the LRT to avoid traffic.
