SHAH ALAM, Dec 6 — The Sessions Court here today discharged and acquitted a former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) assistant governor of two graft charges amounting to RM100,000 nine years ago.

Judge Asmadi Hussin in his ruling said the prosecution had failed to prove that Datuk Mohamad Daud Dol Moin accepted bribes from one Mohd Fazli Ibrahim to help a businessman, Abdul Kayum Syed Ahmad secure a “Printing and Purchase of RM5 Polymer Banknotes” agreement between BNM and Note Printing Australia Ltd.

The judge also said Mohd Fazli had never stated that he was asked by Abdul Kayum to offer the bribes to Mohamad Daud; furthermore, the contract was approved by the Finance Ministry and not BNM.

Mohamad Daud was charged with receiving RM50,000 from Abdul Kayum through Mohd Fadzli at Dome Restaurant, Bangsar Shopping Centre Kuala Lumpur on December 1, 2004, and another RM50,000 on February 16, 2005 at the same place.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Saifuddin represented the prosecution while Datuk Salehuddin Saidin defended Mohamad Daud, 60, who, when met outside the court, expressed relief at getting his name cleared. — Bernama
