GEORGE TOWN, Nov 29 — Even as Selangor continues to fend off criticisms against the latest adjustments to the state’s salary structure, Penang representatives received news today that they too will have their wages bumped next year, but at an overall lower hike of 88 per cent.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is expected to table an amendment to the Members of the Administration and Members of the Legislative Assembly Enactment (Renumeration) 1980 in order to increase the salaries of the state assemblymen.
He is expected to table the amendment at the end of the state legislative assembly session on December 13.
The statute for the amendment was handed out to all state assemblymen during today’s proceedings.
With the pay hike, if approved, Penang state assemblymen will each earn a monthly salary of RM6,000 along with RM5,500 for various allowances or a total of RM11,500.
Currently, their salary is RM6,112.79, of which RM2,000 is a fixed allowance that includes special allowance, entertainment, transport and a driver.
This means, with the pay hike, their allowance will also be increased from RM500 to RM1,500 for their special allowance, RM500 to RM1,000 for their entertainment allowance, RM400 to RM1,000 for their transport, RM600 to RM1,500 for a driver’s allowance and an additional housing allowance of RM500.
The proposed hike comes on the heels of Selangor’s announcement of a 87 per cent pay hike for its state representatives (from RM6,000 to RM11,250), a 268 per cent hike for the Speaker from RM6,109.29 to RM22,500 and a 373 per cent hike for the deputy Speaker from RM3,327.50 to RM15,750.
Selangor’s state executive councillors will also see a pay hike of 231 per cent from RM6,109.29 to RM20,250 while the mentri besar will have a pay rise of 106.4 per cent from RM14,175 to RM29,250.
