GEORGE TOWN, Nov 22 — The rate of crime against women in Penang has dropped by 15 per cent between January and October this year compared to the corresponding period last year, Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said.

He said crime against women such as rape, molestation, maid abuse and domestic violence, had declined by 73 cases, compared to over 80 cases reported last year.

“This year, we also managed to rescue 33 underage girls, who have fallen victims to a prostitution syndicate, following raids on numerous entertainment centres statewide,” he told reporters after launching the special Ops Cantas Wanita team here today.

He said the team, led by a female officer with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and supported by a female Inspector and 18 policewomen of other ranks, would focus on handling violent crime cases involving women and teenage girls.

Abdul Rahim said during this school holiday, the team members would also be stationed at shopping malls, recreational areas and inside public transport, including passenger ferry, to strengthen public safety.

He said, at present, there were 1,200 policewomen in Penang and more of them would be absorbed into the team. — Bernama
