KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 — Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam retained the MIC deputy presidency unopposed after nominations were filed today ahead of the party election.
MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel announced the nomination results at the MIC headquarters here today.
“Dr Subramaniam retained the MIC deputy president's post uncontested,” Palanivel told the crowd at the MIC headquarters here today, as applause broke out.
Dr Subramaniam's victory comes after Palanivel kept his post uncontested on September 1.
Dr Subramaniam told reporters later that his victory was a step in enhancing unity in the party.
“The party president and I work as a team to uplift the Indian community,” he said.
“We are well aware of the issues faced by the Indian community...we'll carry out certain programmes, especially in education and in social development,” added the health minister.
Incumbent vice-presidents Datuk M. Saravanan and Datuk S.K. Devamany will defend their posts against six contenders fighting for the three vice-presidency spots, who are: outgoing MIC Youth chief Datuk T. Mohan, former MIC Youth chief Datuk S.A. Vigneswaran, Johor's Datuk S. Balakrishnan, party treasurer-general Datuk Jaspal Singh, former MIC vice-president Datuk S. Sothinathan, and MIC Bukit Bintang division deputy chairman James Selvaraja.
The elections of the three vice-presidents and 23 members of the party's central working committee will be held on November 30.
MIC improved its performance in Election 2013 by winning four out of nine federal seats it contested, up from the three seats netted in the previous general election.
All four MIC MPs are also ministers or deputy ministers.
