TAWAU, Sept 23 — The customs department here has seized five boats ferrying various subsidised goods, believed to be smuggled, en route to a neighbouring country.

Detained to facilitate investigation under ‘Operasi Kilat’ last Saturday at the border waters between Malaysia and Indonesia were the boat captains.

Sabah Customs deputy director Hamzah Sundang said among the subsidised goods seized were petrol (300 litres), cooking oil (102kg), sugar (360kg), flour (140kg), cooking gas (30 drums) and eggs (9,000).

“All the items confiscated were valued at RM50,490,” told reporters here today.

He said the suspects would be investigated under the Customs Act 1967.

Meanwhile, Hamzah said beginning today, the Sabah Customs Department would enforce Section 26 of the act in Tawau, which prohibited the landing of goods at ungazetted sites. — Bernama
