KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 — Members of several NGOs today staged a peaceful demonstration in front of the United States Embassy against the proposed military strike by the United States against Syria.
They assembled for about an hour from 11am, carrying posters and banners, some of which had the words “Save Syria”, “War is a Crime”, “The Killings Must
Stop” and “Say No to War”, and then moved across the road from the mission on the instruction of the authorities.
The NGOs included the Perdana Global Peace Foundation (PGPF) Club, Putera 1Malaysia Club, Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Rakyat Sejagat and Pertubuhan Permata Angkatan Perpaduan Islam.
PGPF Club secretary Muhammad Radzilah Abdullah, Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali and Putera 1Malaysia Club vice-president Datuk Mohd Farid Hassan handed a protest memorandum to a regional security officer of the embassy at about noon.
Ibrahim said they strongly condemned the expressed desire of the United States to launch a military strike against Syria as it would result in the loss of innocent lives, including children’s, and damage to property.
He urged Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman to summon the United States ambassador to Wisma Putra to state that the government and people of Malaysia were not in favour of a war in Syria.
Cheras OCPD ACP Mohan Singh Tara Singh said the police had tight control of the demonstration and the participants dispersed peacefully afterwards.
The United States was reportedly planning to launch a limited military strike against Syria in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack by the Syrian government. — Bernama
