KUALA LUMPUR, September 8 — Around 15 special dogs from local animal shelter Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) will be hanging out at Desa ParkCity tomorrow.
Canine lovers will be able to show their love and affection to these disabled and geriatric dogs who will be at Car Park 2 of The Waterfront in Desa ParkCity from 11.30am onwards.
According to MDDB’s director, Irene Low, the special meet-and-greet with their canines was to give them a chance to enjoy attention from visitors while carrying out a donation drive as the shelter was in crucial need of food and funds.
“Those who want to contribute rice and kibbles can bring these over there as well as get to spend some time with our dogs.
“Others who want to take our dogs for a walk in the park can also do so,’’ Low said.
The special meet-and-greet also aims to give an insight to the public on MDDB’s works and welfare projects for dogs.
Low added that this was also because they had been receiving inquiries on MDDB from the public with many wanting to come over to their shelter.
The overwhelming response was after an appeal by MDDB for help appeared on the Malay Mail site with a large number of people, who did not know about MDDB’s existence and wanted to see the dogs and know more about the organisation before they donated.
“Unfortunately, it is not suitable for each and everyone of them to visit our place as every time strangers arrive, the dogs will get worked up.
“And if there are five visits for that day, it will be five times agitation which could result in a massive dog fight, given that all our dogs are free roaming in our shelter,” she said.
She added the disabled and geriatric dogs, participating in the event, were more used to people than the younger and robust former street dogs that are at the MDDB sanctuary.
MDDB is currently icollecting rice and kibbles to last the sanctuary for at least three months.
It was previously reported that the sanctuary was struggling to keep their almost 400 dogs fed especially after an increase in the price of rice and short supply of low-grade rice.
“We usually have about one or two-months reserve but have run out at the moment.
“But we have managed to raise funds for one month and hope to collect enough as a reserve for at least an additional month,’’ Low said.
MDDB is currently housing almost 400 dogs and at least 80 are special needs with some paralysed, three-legged as well as frail and geriatric.
